British Science Weekly predicts: Chinese is the must-learn language for the next decade. Apart from Chinese speaking countries, 30 million people are learning Chinese globally. Tertiary institutions in Europe and America rush into offering Chinese-related courses.
The United States:
colleges list Chinese as AP course. High school students studying Chinese can have advanced credit in college if they pass the exam. Across the United States, 2500 high schools offer Chinese course.
Korea:
The wave of Chinese learning swipes the entire nation. The Chinese Department of Seoul University becomes the first choice of art students, with a low admission rate of 1/40.
Japan:
A 2001 survey shows that 59% of college students firmly believe in the necessity of learning Chinese. The year 2002 saw a 20% increase of people taking Chinese Proficiency Test than previous year. Though the Tokyo Chinese School initially aimed at educating overseas Chinese, local
Japanese account for 50%-80% of the student number.
Thailand:
